The Community Guide recommends built environment interventions to promote physical activity. Built environment interventions include pedestrian and bicycle transportation system intervention approaches and land use and environment design approaches. Available data show implementation of these interventions is fairly low across the United States.
The PAPREN Coordinating Center, together with other collaborators and input from an expert panel, led the Expert Consensus for Local Implementation of Physical Activity Policy (ECLIPPSE) project to develop a compilation of implementation strategies with promise for aiding communities in implementing built environment changes that support active transportation and leisure-time physical activity.
PAPREN multi-PI Stephenie Lemon described the ECLIPPSE framework in the 2025 PAPREN State of the Science presentation, Promising Strategies for Implementing Built Environment Change: Findings from the Expert Consensus for Local Implementation of Physical Activity Policy (ECLIPPSE). We published an open access article describing the development and laying out all strategies. We also produced a set of briefs to help users select and use the strategies. The next step is to see how experience in the field fits with these categories so we can take it to the next level.
Today we’re launching a survey to understand experience implementing the strategies included in the ECLIPPSE compilation in the field.
We are inviting people with experience in implementing built environment changes to complete the survey. We welcome responses from people who work directly on local implementation at the local level as well as those who support local implementation efforts from the state or other levels.
The survey will take about 10–15 minutes to complete.
