Tell me more!

America Walks, in partnership with AARP Livable Communities and the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has opened up applications for individuals to apply for the 2023 suite of Walking College programs.  The 6-month curriculum (requiring about 5 hours/week) includes modules on leadership development, coalition-building, walkable community design, local public policy, and strategic planning.

Learn about past Fellows

To learn more about the course and the impact it can have, check out Stories from the State Walking College: An Idea Book for Taking Action to Create More Walkable Communities. This brand-new publication (produced by America Walks with support from AARP Livable Communities) includes articles on “First Steps for Walkable Community Advocates” and “Getting Started with Walk Audits” as well as featuring the following Walking College Fellows and their projects:

  • Ariel Hamburger (2021 Fellow working in San Diego, California)
  • Juanita Edwards, Sybil Boutilier, and Vicki Nichols (2021 Fellows: Marin City and Sausalito, California)
  • Keith Larson (2022 Fellow: Peachtree City, Georgia)
  • Natalie Gille (2022 Fellow: Bemidji, Minnesota)

If you’re inspired by these stories and wish to unleash your own passion for walking and improving your community, now is the perfect time to take that first step.  America Walks is currently accepting applications for the National Walking College (sponsored by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and several State Walking College programs (sponsored by AARP Livable Communities), through Friday, March 10th, 2023.
